Okantey outshines Akaak in straight sets to advance to FNT Consults Friday Night Championship semifinals
Reginald Okantey defeated Andrews Adu Appiah (Akaak) to reach the Friday Night Tennis Championship semifinals at the Ghana Tennis Club, Adabraka.
Okantey had too much pace on the ground and off his strings for the Atomic tennis club based Akaak, winning 6-2,6-3 in one hour and 15 minutes.
Speaking to ghanatennis.org Okantey said, "I played incredible tennis," he said. "I felt very confident and comfortable from the start. It was definitely one of the best performances I’ve ever displayed in my career."
Okantey can now enjoy a 14-day rest, awaiting the outcome of Friday’s quarterfinals between Benjamin Palm and Benjamin Fumi.
Okantey's forehand ripped down the line and a volley into a gaping space he had created brought him break point, and an Akaak error handed it over. Okantey moved to 5-2 clear thanks to some typical athletic defenses and deep returns, and closed out the set after 29 minutes.
Things got no better for Akaak in the second set and within 20 minutes he was again down a double-break point, this time throwing in a double-fault to fall 5-3 behind.
The beaten Akaak admitted of the demolition job: "Okantey played very very good. I didn't have any chance to win tonight. All I can say is Okantey was better in every moment than I was."
In the social grudge match, Chairman of Ghana tennis club Abraham Oppong defeated Jesse Atu Desbordes who doubles as Chairman of Kaneshie tennis club and also executive board member of Ghana tennis federation 7-6(3),6-4.
